Thank You Notes
With the dawn of the electronic age, don’t think that the old fashioned hand written thank you note is obsolete. They are still very much in fashion and expected. Yes, thank you notes should still be hand written. A computer printed or fill in the blank thank you note is definitely in poor taste.
When should you write a thank you note? A thank you note should be written to show gratitude for gifts received after a birthday, wedding, wedding or bridal shower, baby shower. As well as for gifts received during an illness or in sympathy.
A thank you after being hosted in someone’s home for a couple nights and also for a dinner party in which you received a written invitation. For a dinner party in which you were verbally invited, a verbal thank you or phone call will suffice.
Business situations which call for a thank you note include a job interview and after being entertained by your boss.
Thank you notes should always be at least three lines and should be very personal. Don’t be generic unless you are thanking for a monetary gift in which is ok to say “thank you for your generous gift”. Don’t say anything negative and don’t talk about yourself. You are talking about the gift and the givers generosity in a thank you note.
Thank you notes should be written and mailed in a timely fashion. Bridal shower thank yous should be mailed within two weeks after the shower and wedding thank yous within 6-8 weeks after the wedding (depending on if you are going on a honeymoon). And if you forget and some time passes, it’s still ok. A late thank you note is better than no thank you note at all.
