Hydrangea Shrubs and Flowers

The most common Hydrangea is the Hydrangea macrophylla which is the bigleaf or French Hydrangea.  This is the variety that has either pink or blue flower blossom depending on the pH of the soil in which they are grown. To achieve a blue flower blossom the hydrangea must be grown in acid soil with a pH of 5-5.5. To grow pink hydrangea flower blossoms, the soil must be alkaline or with a pH of 6 or more.

Hydrangea bushes are deciduous fast growing shrubs growing from 4 feet to 12 feet tall depending on the variety.
Hydrangeas don’t like to be hot and prefer morning sun and afternoon shade. Their big leaves can suffer and wilt in full noon day sun. In general, they require a lot of water. In fact, the name Hydrangea is loosely translated to mean “water barrel”.

The Hydrangea flower has been found to have many different meanings and representations including:
thank you for understanding, vanity or boastfulness and anything heartfelt. It is used at the 4th wedding anniversary flower.

Another Hydrangea beauty is the Hydrangea arborescens also known as the smooth Hydrangea. The most popular variety is the Annabelle which is characterized by pale green flower blossom globes in the early summer which slowly turn white over time.

This Hydrangea shrub is deciduous and grows to 5 feet high and wide. It grows best in zones 3-9 and enjoys a cool winter. It thrives in rich moist soil, and either morning or dappled sunlight.

Hydrangea Weddings
The hydrangea is a romantic old fashioned flower reminiscent of years gone by, and it is no wonder why it is a wedding favorite. There are many reasons why the Hydrangea is an ideal wedding flower choice. First of all, there are many different color choices. Choose from white, pink, blue or green flower blossoms to suit your wedding colors. The blooms are perfect compact round globes which make it easy to decorate and arrange. The fragrance is very soft and delicate and not overpowering.

The versatile Hydrangea flower has many different options in a wedding. The flower globes can be tied together at the stem to form a perfect round bridal bouquet. It can be a filler between other flowers in a bridal bouquet or table centerpiece. And it can be used singly to decorate a wedding cake, church aisles, corsages or hair.
